The City of Wellington Pipe Band is currently looking for a new Pipe Major, following the resignation of Davie Welsh from the position. The following press release was sent to PBNews;
It was with much regret that the City of Wellington Pipe Band recently received the resignation for the position of Pipe Major from Davie Welsh. Davie said that it was a very difficult decision to make, but that it did not necessarily mean he would be leaving the band completely.

Anyone interested in filling this exciting role and pushing the band forward into the future should contact the Secretary of the City of Wellington Pipe Band at PO Box 2870, Wellington 6140 or by email to admin@fireriskmanagement.co.nz.

The Canterbury Caledonian Society’s Pipe Band is pleased to announce the appointment of Richard Hawke to the position of Pipe Band Director. Richard, a former Pipe Major of the Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band, rejoins the band to work closely with the current Pipe Major, Jim Allan, towards the 2009 Nationals in Christchurch, and beyond. The vision for the band includes a World Championship campaign in Scotland.
Richard Hawke is one of New Zealand’s most successful pipers, having won the Highland Piping Society of London Gold Medal (Oban), the Braemar Gold (twice) and Silver Medal (twice), and the Dunvegan Gold Medal.
Within pipe bands Richard has gained 4 National Grade 1 championships, 9th in the Grade 1 world championships and as current pipe band director of St Andrew’s College Pipe Band gained two Grade 3 championships, three National Juvenile championships, and 3rd at the 2007 World Juvenile Championships.
Richard will remain as fulltime Pipe Band Director at St Andrew’s College.

The Canterbury Caledonian Society’s Pipe Band was formed in 1902 and has been in Grade one in New Zealand since 1967. Over the past 5 years the band has been rebuilding and strengthening to remain a top level Grade 1 band in New Zealand and the world.
Davy Welsh, Pipe Major of the City of Wellington Pipe Band for over 2 years, has resigned from the position. More news as it comes to hand.
Torphichen & Bathgate and Cap Caval, two bands who performed exceptionally well at the Grade 2 World Pipe Band Championships, have been promoted to Grade 1 by the RSPBA, Pipes|Drums reports.
Bagad Cap Caval, the first Breton Band to be recognised by the RSPBA as an official Grade 1 Unit, won the World Pipe Band Championships earlier in August. Torphichen won the Champion of Champions award for 2008.
Torphichen & Bathgate was previously in Grade 1 in the early-mid 1990′s.
