Richard Hawke, Davey Welsh and Stuart Easton won the top honours at the Hastings Highland Games on Easter Weekend. Richard Hawke won his first Clasp after winning the Gold Medal in the mid 1990′s. Davey Welsh took his first top New Zealand prize by winning the Gold Medal in a class of 17. Stuart Easton claimed the overall A Grade prize, with Brendon Eade, Richard Hawke and Dr Angus McDonald. The 2012 National Pipe Band Championships are confirmed to be held in Tauranga on the 9th and 10th of March. The city last held the Nationals in 1994. The Tauranga Domain will be the venue for the competition events with a street march course within the CBD area. (more…)

It was with great sadness that the New Zealand piping fraternity learned of the death of New Zealand’s first Gold Medalist, Lewis Turrell, on the eve of the Hastings Highland Games. Lewis had fought a lengthy battle with lung cancer. (more…)

The 2011 Australasian South Pacific Pipe Band Championships, to be held in Timaru next weekend, have been abandoned due to the devastating Christchurch Earthquake on Tuesday. “It has become increasingly clear on this occasion that to go ahead with this contest in Timaru next weekend could detrimentally impact others outside of the pipe band community”, Iain Blakely, President of the RNZPBA said in a statement (more…)

Auckland and District, Auckland Police, St Kentigerns took the Auckland Centre Contest on the weekend. Only one band competed in each of Grade 1 and 3. St Kentigerns took the contest ahead of 7 other bands in the field. (more…)

Greg Wilson won overall at the 2011 NZ A Grade Open Championships, held at Waipu in the weekend. Stuart Easton was the overall winner of the Waipu Highland Games. Stuart won the March, Strathspey and Reel and the Piobaireachd. Greg Wilson, Martin Frewen and Marion Horsburgh won the Strathspey and Reel, the Hornpipe and Jig and the March respectively. Liam Kernaghan won the Under 21, and William Rowe won the B Grade.
