Field Marshal Montgomery have been crowned World Pipe Band Champions for 2011, finishing 18 points clear of the nearest band Simon Fraser University. Scottish Power broke the top 3 for the first time, finishing 3rd, and new-comers Inveraray and District finishing 4th. St Laurence O’Toole and Boghall and Bathgate fill out the rest of the top 6.
Shotts and Dykehead won the Drumming overall, being the first band to win it from the qualifier since 2001. Boghall and Bathgate won the MSR and Field Marshal won the Medley.
Earlier in the day, Manawatu qualified for the afternoon’s World Pipe Band Championship finals, finishing 4th in the Grade 1 Qualifer.
Canterbury Caledonian finished 8th in the qualifier.

Both the Canterbury Caledonian Society Pipe Band and Manawatu Scottish Pipe Band had good starts to their respective 2011 World Pipe Band Championship campaigns, with Manawatu finishing runners-up to Field Marshal Montgomery in Ireland. Back in Scotland, Canterbury Caledonian finished 3rd in both the MSR and Medley at North Berwick, behind Boghall and Bathgate, and took 5th at Bridge of Allan the next day. (more…)

Angus McColl celebrated during the weekend, after his successful win at the Donald McDonald Quaich event. This year marks the 25th Anniversary of this prestigious Piobaireachd event which has been held annually at The Clan Donald Centre,Skye.
Angus played Lady MacDonald’s Lament.
Other competitiors were

- Niall Stewart, Too long in this Condition
- Roddy MacLeod, Lament for the Departure of King James
The judge for the event was Dr Jack Taylor.

Stuart Easton took the overall prize for a second weekend in a row when he competed at the Wellington Pipers Club competitions on Saturday. Brendon Eade won the Everest Cup for the Piobaireachd, with Easton second. Stuart managed to win the Brown Cup, with Murray Mansfield runner up. Numbers were high this year, with 15 competing in the Piobaireachd and 18 in the Light music. (more…)

Stuart Easton was the overall winner at the Queens Birthday Solo competitions, held in Dunedin on the weekend. Stuart won the 6/8 March and the Hornpipe and Jig, while Brendon Eade won the Piobaireachd and 2/4 Marches. Callum Gilchrist won overall B Grade, including taken the Silver Medal Piobaireachd. Brendon Eade scored a rare double on Saturday, after taking both the Claidhmor and the Targe events at the 2011 Colin Craig Claidhmor invitational. This is only the fourth time in the history of the event one piper has taken both events; Greg Wilson, Grame Bilsland and Stewart McKenzie being the others to complete the feat. Marion Horsburgh was runner up in the Piobaireachd, with Martin Frewen placing second in the MSRHJ.

Kiwi’s dominated over at the annual R U Brown competitions, held in Adelaide, Australia, with Stuart Easton, Katie Lawton and Tam McGirr taking top honours. (more…)

Richard Hawke, Davey Welsh and Stuart Easton won the top honours at the Hastings Highland Games on Easter Weekend. Richard Hawke won his first Clasp after winning the Gold Medal in the mid 1990′s. Davey Welsh took his first top New Zealand prize by winning the Gold Medal in a class of 17. Stuart Easton claimed the overall A Grade prize, with Brendon Eade, Richard Hawke and Dr Angus McDonald.
