The Canterbury Caledonian Society’s Pipe Band is pleased to announce the appointment of Richard Hawke to the position of Pipe Band Director. Richard, a former Pipe Major of the Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band, rejoins the band to work closely with the current Pipe Major, Jim Allan, towards the 2009 Nationals in Christchurch, and beyond. The vision for the band includes a World Championship campaign in Scotland.
Richard Hawke is one of New Zealand’s most successful pipers, having won the Highland Piping Society of London Gold Medal (Oban), the Braemar Gold (twice) and Silver Medal (twice), and the Dunvegan Gold Medal.
Within pipe bands Richard has gained 4 National Grade 1 championships, 9th in the Grade 1 world championships and as current pipe band director of St Andrew’s College Pipe Band gained two Grade 3 championships, three National Juvenile championships, and 3rd at the 2007 World Juvenile Championships.
Richard will remain as fulltime Pipe Band Director at St Andrew’s College.
The Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band is very excited about the plans Richard has and is looking forward to a long working relationship into the future.
The Canterbury Caledonian Society’s Pipe Band was formed in 1902 and has been in Grade one in New Zealand since 1967. Over the past 5 years the band has been rebuilding and strengthening to remain a top level Grade 1 band in New Zealand and the world.
