The City of Dunedin Pipe Band is to make it’s first appearance, since the 2009 National Pipe Band Championships in Grade 1, back in Grade 2 at the Victoria Square Day, under musical leadership of Alec Findlater, Matt Fraser, and Brad Willson
Victoria Square presents the perfect opportunity for the band to go out and show piping in Dunedin is infact still alive and well. The aim of the attendance, according to one bandsman, was to “enjoy playing and enjoy each others company, and not to focus on the results.”
“At the end of the day, it’s about playing music. We want to play the material we’ve worked on for this year, and we’re all proud of the effort we’ve put in to get things going again”
Former Pipe Sergeant Alec Findlater has taken over control of the band as Pipe Major, and Matt Fraser (of Manawatu Scottish Society PB) has become his assistant. Brad Willson, member of the Grade 1 City of Dunedin and former member of the Hamilton Caledonian Pipe Band, is Drum Sergeant.
The inclusion of City of Dunedin at Victoria Square should see atleast 3 or 4 Grade 2 Bands competing for the title. Last year, the City of Invercargill Pipe Band under their new leadership took the Grade 2 title from St Andrews College.
