Harry Hawke was voted “Pipe Idol” as part of the Highland Piping Society of Canterbury’s Inaugural Pipe Idol Competition, held at Strowan House, St Andrews College on Saturday evening. The event drew crowds from as far north as Nelson, and as far south as Dunedin.
Five invited competitors competed in an MSR and “open medley” event, which was to be around 10 minutes long and was own choice in terms of content. All invited competitors were Under 21. The event was judged through 70% audience vote, and 30% from the views of the three secret judges, prominent in the New Zealand piping scene. At the end of the night, the winner and runner-up were presented with mini-trophies.
Liam Kernaghan was runner up. Other competitors were Richard Cox (Dunedin), Simon Fraser (Christchurch) and Callum Gilchrist (Nelson).
